The Sky’s No Limit for Joseph

Sometimes, hospice care looks like comfort. Other times, like simple connection. And once in a blue moon, it looks like jumping out of a plane.

Joseph McCarthy had one big dream left to check off his list: skydiving. And no diagnosis was going to keep him on the ground.

When Joseph’s hospice team in Denison, Iowa, learned about his dream, they worked with his family to make it happen.

With his family watching below, Joseph suited up and took to the sky. RN Case Manager Ashley Savery and Social Worker Brandi Miller were there too, getting to witness a moment that represented so much of what hospice care can be.

Then, Joseph jumped.

There’s no telling what he experienced those 10,000 feet, but one thing’s for sure — it’s a memory neither Joseph, his family nor hospice team will ever forget.

The experience was a beautiful reminder that a diagnosis doesn’t define a person and neither does hospice.

The Denison hospice team is grateful to Joseph and his family for allowing them to share in such an extraordinary chapter of his journey. But they’re especially thankful for a safe landing.

Some wishes are quiet. Some bring people together.

And some require a parachute.
