Nonie’s Perfect Day

Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones no one could have planned.

For Luanna “Nonie” Owings, nature has always been something sacred. Knowing this, her St. Croix Hospice aide, Kirsten Dokken-Ellis, and Care Transition Coordinator, Sarah McGowan, worked together to make a memorable outing for Nonie and her family. Sarah arranged a visit with the Sioux Falls Butterfly House and Aquarium, which generously donated admission for the whole group.

The day already carried special meaning with it being her daughter’s birthday. But Nonie noted, “The only thing that could make this day better is if a butterfly landed on me.”

No more than a few moments after entering the butterfly garden, Nonie was greeted by a butterfly that landed gently on her knee.

Nonie and her family spent the rest of their time exploring the aquarium and other exhibits. Throughout the day, Kirsten made sure Nonie remained comfortable and that her oxygen equipment was working properly, allowing her to simply enjoy the day with her family. Kirsten ended their visit by surprising Nonie with a stuffed stingray from the gift shop; a keepsake she now always carries with her.

To help preserve the memories, Nonie’s care team also created a photo album for the family to cherish for years to come.

Nonie says St. Croix Hospice has helped her feel special every day — not just because of planned outings, but through the compassion, companionship and personalized care she receives with every visit.
