It’s times like these when you realize who truly matters in life. In my case, it was my mother, who entered hospice care quite suddenly. Even though I knew it was something that eventually had to be done, nothing truly prepares you for that moment. It’s a shock, it’s emotional, and it’s one of the hardest decisions a family can face.

The professionalism, compassion, and genuine care that everyone at St. Croix Hospice showed my mother and our family have been second to none. I honestly could not have wished for better people to help us through this.

My father was in hospice years ago, so I understood the general process, but I wasn’t deeply involved at the time. My mother carried most of that weight back then, and now having experienced it myself, I have an entirely different level of respect for what families and caregivers go through. It is one of the most difficult experiences in life, and I truly believe people cannot fully understand it until they live it themselves.

From the very first person I spoke with while learning about their services, to my mother’s nurse and case manager, to the management team, physician, chaplain, massage therapist, and even “the guitar guy,” as my mother lovingly calls him, every single person has treated us with kindness, dignity, patience, and genuine humanity. You can feel that these people truly care about what they do. They do not treat this like just another job. They put their hearts into it.

What stands out most to me is that they care not only for the patient, but for the family as well. During moments that feel overwhelming, confusing, and heartbreaking, they bring calm, reassurance, and compassion into the room.

Nobody and no organization is perfect every second of every day, and life itself certainly isn’t. But what matters is the heart behind the care, the willingness to help, and the commitment to doing right by people during some of the worst moments of their lives. That is what I found with St. Croix Hospice.

To everyone there, including those I may never personally meet, thank you. I sincerely wish all of you the very best in life, because the work you do matters more than words can properly express.

They were so good taking care of my Mom. They kept us well informed on what was going on, what they were doing to help her every day. They were very caring and gave excellent help.
