Joe and Rocco’s Reunion
At St. Croix Hospice, we believe that honoring what matters most to someone in their end-of-life journey isn’t just compassionate — it’s essential. So, when RNCM Jennifer Carter from our Independence, Missouri, branch gently asked her patient Joseph Cervello what would bring him joy that day, his answer was simple and deeply human: “It would be wonderful to see my good friend Rocco again.”
Joe and Rocco had once shared laughter and companionship as residents of the same long-term care community. Over time, life led them to different places, and Joe missed spending time with his friend. Jennifer took Joe’s words to heart. She reached out to both care communities and began weaving together a plan. As her plan came to life, she came to learn that both men were now under the care of St. Croix Hospice and discovered that Rocco shared Joe’s affinity for Anthony’s — a beloved local Italian restaurant. Armored with this knowledge, the care team rallied to make the reunion unforgettable.
On the morning of their special day, Rachel Morgan, Hospice Aide, also from the Independence branch, arrived early to help Rocco dress in his finest. Meanwhile, Aspire Platte City provided transportation, and Tiffany Springs Health & Rehab graciously offered a private dining room at Anthony’s for the occasion.
The room quickly filled with the comforting aroma of pasta and garlic bread, but even richer was the sound of laughter and stories shared between two old friends. They toasted to cherished memories, savored their favorite dishes and for a few precious hours, the world felt just like it used to.
This wasn’t just a meal — it was a moment of connection and a celebration of friendship. It’s a reminder that even in the quiet corners of life, friendship finds a way.
