Jimmy Pierce

Registered Nurse Case Manager

Exposure to hospice care comes in many ways. For Jimmy Pierce, it began with his father-in-law’s terminal diagnosis. Though familiar with the healthcare field, Jimmy didn’t fully grasp the depth and meaning of hospice until his father-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer and came to live with him and his wife. When hospice stepped in, the experience transformed his understanding entirely.

“I always felt like hospice was the end of the story,” Jimmy shared. “But a former coworker helped me realize it’s really about writing another chapter. Folks are taking a brave stance to move to the next phase.”

Thanks to the compassionate hospice team, his father-in-law’s final chapter was filled with meaningful experiences — social outings, laughter and moments that celebrated life. After his father-in-law passed in March 2021, Jimmy and his wife, a nurse practitioner, reflected on how profoundly hospice had touched their family. That conversation led Jimmy to pursue a new calling. In September 2021, he joined St. Croix Hospice’s Jeffersonville, Indiana, branch as an RN Case Manager.

Jimmy’s career journey is as unique as it is inspiring. He began in rock radio before deciding at age 30 to pursue nursing. While working as a hospital secretary, he attended nursing school, later building his career in intensive care and oncology nursing. Yet it was hospice — and one deeply personal experience — that gave new purpose to his profession.

Caring for others has long been central to Jimmy’s family. He and his wife, along with their three children, regularly take part in international medical mission trips with their church. Most recently, he and his wife traveled to The Gambia, Africa, to teach medical education to local communities.

Today, Jimmy embodies the mission, purpose and values of hospice care in every interaction. His passion is unmistakable, and he sums it up simply.

“I love hospice care.”

As we celebrate National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we honor Jimmy for his dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment to serving others in need.
