Questions Families Often Ask
It’s common for patients, families and caregivers to have many questions as they consider their options. Below are a few frequently asked questions and answers to help you make an informed decision about hospice care.
- Can hospice care start right away? Yes, if your loved one qualifies, hospice care can often begin the same day of your referral.
- Do I need a doctor’s order to start hospice? No, anyone — including family, friends or caregivers — can make a hospice referral.
- Will my loved one’s primary care provider still be involved in their care? Yes. St. Croix Hospice will coordinate with your primary care provider to ensure continuity of care.
- What services does the hospice provide? Standard hospice care includes medical care, pain management, emotional and spiritual support, volunteer services, music and massage therapy, and any additional services, such as counseling or bereavement support. Some, like St. Croix Hospice, go above and beyond with additional programs to meet each patient’s specific needs.
- How does the hospice involve family members in care planning and decision-making? Clear communication and family involvement are essential to providing the best support for both patients and their caregivers.
